“Changing the Narrative on Suicide"

The Department of Social Work, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Child     Development, Malappuram District, organised a World Suicide Prevention Campaign Awareness Program on "Changing the Narrative on Suicide". The program intended to raise awareness of the significance of mental health, and suicide prevention, and emphasize the need for changing societal attitudes towards suicide.

        The program began with a warm welcome speech delivered by Ms. Shifa Hafsath, a third-semester Department of Social Work student. She expressed gratitude to all the attendees. The Presidential Address was delivered by Ms. Fahidha Jebin P, the Head of the Department of Social Work. She emphasized the importance of awareness in suicide prevention and mental health advocacy. the inaugural address was given by Mr. Shamsudheen MT, the esteemed Principal of the college. In his speech highlighted the role of educational institutions in fostering mental health awareness and the importance of addressing sensitive topics like suicide with empathy and proactive action. The keynote session was led by Senior Lawyer, Adv. Sudha Haridwar, is an esteemed legal expert and mental health advocate. In her talk, Adv. Haridwar addressed the legal aspects surrounding suicide and mental health in India. She emphasized the need for a humanistic and compassionate approach toward individuals who experience suicidal tendencies. Following the keynote session, Mr Riyas, gender specialist of the Ministry of Women and Child Development Malappuram district. Mr. Vineeth K, IQAC Coordinator, and Mr. Nidhin T, NSS Program Coordinator, delivered their facilitation speeches. Both facilitators commended the initiative taken by the Department of Social Work and the Ministry of Women and Child Development for addressing the crucial issue of suicide prevention. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Haseena NV, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work. Ms. Haseena expressed her sincere appreciation to all the participants, resource persons, and the organizing team for their contributions. The program concluded with a collective resolution to work towards changing the narrative on suicide by encouraging compassion and open discussions.
