POCSO, JJ ACT& Child Friendly Home.
On Thursday, September 5th, A one-day workshop was organized to address crucial issues related to child protection and welfare, specifically focusing on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act, and creating child-friendly environments at the Government Children's Home in Thavanur, Malappuram for Social work (BSW) students from KMCT Arts and Science college, Kuttippuram.
The workshop began with a warm welcome speech by Shihabudheen Pt, Director of CSILL Foundation, who emphasized the importance of understanding legal frameworks like the POCSO and JJ Acts to ensure the safety and well-being of children. He highlighted the role of social work students in advocating for child protection and fostering safe environments. Following the welcome, the Presidential Address was delivered by Hemalatha, a member of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Malappuram. She stressed the crucial role of the CWC in safeguarding children’s rights and the importance of collaborative efforts between institutions and future social workers to build a more secure future for children in care.
The first session was led by Advocate Shajesh Basker P, a member of the Juvenile Justice Board, Malappuram. He provided a detailed explanation of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, focusing on how it addresses children in conflict with the law and those in need of care and protection. The session highlighted the legal procedures and rehabilitation measures in place for juveniles.
Advocate Rajesh Puthukkad conducted the second session, which covered the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He explained the key provisions of the Act, including the importance of mandatory reporting, child-friendly judicial procedures, and the penalties for various offences. The session stressed the importance of the Act in safeguarding children from sexual exploitation.
The third session was conducted by Advocate Jabir, who focused on the concept of Child-Friendly Homes. He explained the importance of creating safe, nurturing, and supportive environments within children’s care homes and the role such homes play in the emotional and psychological well-being of children under institutional care.
The final session was led by Advocate Favas, who discussed the various Child Protection Facilities available. He outlined the infrastructure and services in place to protect children at risk, emphasizing the roles of child care institutions, legal frameworks, and collaborative efforts by social workers, legal experts, and authorities to ensure comprehensive child protection.
