Day 1: 01/10/2024

The first day of the Community Living Camp for BSW students at Nelliyampathi on October 1, 2024, commenced with registration and arrangements from 3:00 to 4:00 pm, where students settled in and preparations were finalized. The camp inauguration followed from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, where organizers formally introduced the camp’s purpose, encouraging students to embrace the upcoming experiences. A refreshment breaks from 5:00 to 6:00 pm provided an opportunity for students to relax and connect informally. At 6:00 pm, PSW Satheesh K., an expert with qualifications in MSW and PGDGC and Executive Director of SWISS, led an interactive session introducing the camp's rural focus, guiding students through the expectations and learning outcomes. The ice-breaking activities during this session helped participants to open up, creating a cooperative and enthusiastic atmosphere. Dinner was served from 7:30 to 8:30 pm, where shared meals fostered community spirit. The day concluded with a cultural program from 8:30 to 9:30 pm, featuring performances that allowed students to express themselves creatively and build camaraderie. The first day established a positive foundation for the camp’s objectives, setting an encouraging tone for the community engagement and learning experiences to follow.

 

Day 2: 02/10/2024

On the second day of the Community Living Camp, the day began early with a meditation session from 6:00 to 7:30 am, setting a calm and focused tone for participants. This was followed by a refreshment break from 7:30 to 8:30 am and breakfast from 8:30 to 9:30 am, ensuring everyone was energized for the day's activities. At 9:30 am, PSW Prasanth M., a professional social worker with an MSW, conducted an insightful session on careers in social work, which provided students with valuable information about future career paths in the field.

The day’s exploration began at 10:30 am with a journey to Kesavanpara, where, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, students participated in a social awareness program in collaboration with the Forest Department and Janamaithri Police. This session emphasized environmental responsibility and community service, which continued with a plastic eradication program from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, where students actively engaged in cleaning the roadside, reinforcing the importance of environmental stewardship. From 1:00 to 3:00 pm, the group embarked on a trek to Kesavanpara, providing a hands-on experience with nature and deepening their appreciation for natural surroundings.

After a refreshment break from 3:00 to 4:00 pm, PSW Satheesh K. facilitated a session on group dynamics from 4:00 to 5:30 pm, where students explored teamwork and cooperation, essential skills in social work. Following this, they spent time preparing for upcoming programs from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. Sri. Prasanth R., a professional trainer, led another ice-breaking session from 7:00 to 8:00 pm, building on earlier team bonding activities. The day ended with dinner from 8:00 to 9:00 pm and a light-hearted "Light and Lively" session from 9:00 to 10:00 pm, offering relaxation and entertainment. Day two was packed with learning and team-building experiences, enhancing students' understanding of community engagement, environmental care, and social responsibility.

 

Day 3: 03/10/2024

On the third day of the Community Living Camp, the day commenced with a refreshing morning walk from 6:00 to 7:00 am, helping participants connect with nature and prepare for the day's activities. A refreshment breaks from 7:00 to 8:00 am was followed by breakfast from 8:00 to 9:00 am, ensuring everyone was well-prepared for the sessions ahead. At 9:00 am, Mr. Ragesh R., a volunteer in palliative care, led a session on the role of social workers in palliative care settings. This insightful discussion emphasized the compassion, skills, and dedication required in palliative care, providing students with an understanding of the unique role social workers play in supporting individuals with serious illnesses.

The morning continued with a fire and rescue awareness program from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, conducted in collaboration with the Kollengode Fire Station. This interactive session provided students with essential knowledge about fire safety, rescue operations, and emergency preparedness, emphasizing the social worker’s role in community safety and response efforts. After a lunch break from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, students engaged in community service through an anganwadi cleaning and painting activity from 2:00 to 6:00 pm, in collaboration with the Women and Child Development Department. This activity reinforced the importance of creating clean, welcoming environments for children and community members.

Following a refreshment break from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, PSW Anitha Krishna Moorthy, a mental health trainer, led a mental health education session from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. This session provided students with valuable insights into mental health issues and the critical role social workers play in promoting mental wellness within communities. Dinner was served from 8:30 to 9:00 pm, after which the day concluded with a lively cultural night from 9:00 to 10:00 pm, where students showcased their talents, celebrating their bond and the shared experiences of the camp. Day three offered both practical skills and meaningful community engagement, enriching students' perspectives on the diverse responsibilities and opportunities in social work.

 

Day 4: 04/10/2024

On the fourth day of the Community Living Camp, students began with an eco-meditation session from 6:00 to 7:00 am, encouraging a deep connection with nature and mindfulness towards environmental conservation. From 7:00 to 8:00 am, they prepared for the day's activities, followed by breakfast from 8:00 to 9:00 am. At 9:00 am, students engaged in camp report writing and a newspaper reading session until 10:30 am, fostering reflection on the past days and staying informed on current affairs.

The day’s major activity was a visit to a tribal colony from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm, where students immersed themselves in the local community to learn about their way of life and conduct data collection. This visit provided a hands-on experience with fieldwork, allowing students to understand social work’s role in tribal development and community-based research. A lunch breaks from 3:00 to 4:00 pm was followed by a refreshment break until 5:00 pm.

In the evening, Mr. S. Pramod, a Section Forest Officer from the Nelliyampathy Forest Station, led an engaging session on the role of social workers in environmental protection from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. This session offered students a comprehensive view of how social workers can contribute to conservation efforts, inspiring them to consider environmental sustainability in their practice. From 6:00 to 7:00 pm, students dedicated time to report writing and interacted with various eminent personalities, gaining insights and advice from experienced professionals.

The evening meal was served from 8:00 to 9:00 pm, followed by a “vent out” session from 9:00 to 10:00 pm, where students had the opportunity to express their thoughts, reflect on the camp experience, and share any challenges faced. The day concluded with a cultural night from 10:00 to 11:00 pm, which brought everyone together to celebrate their achievements and enjoy each other's company. Day four was filled with valuable community engagement, environmental education, and personal reflection, reinforcing the holistic approach to social work.

 

Day 5: 05/10/2024

On the fifth and final day of the Community Living Camp, activities began with a meditation session from 7:00 to 8:00 am, providing a peaceful start and a chance for students to reflect on their camp journey. A brief refreshment break followed from 8:00 to 8:30 am, with breakfast from 8:30 to 9:00 am.

At 9:00 am, students gathered for the camp evaluation and closing ceremony, where they discussed their experiences, shared insights gained, and reflected on how the camp had enriched their understanding of social work. This session allowed students to celebrate their growth and receive feedback on their contributions. The day concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony from 10:30 to 11:00 am, where students received certificates acknowledging their participation and commitment to the camp’s objectives.

The closing day was a meaningful wrap-up, reinforcing the knowledge, skills, and connections built throughout the camp and leaving students with a sense of accomplishment and inspiration to apply their learnings in their future social work endeavors.
